A possible burial site at St. Hilarion...

A possible burial site at St. Hilarion...

How many times we climbed this slope, higher and higher, to reach St. Hilarion?
How many times we came here?
We were here in the hot days of summer, we were here in the cold days of winter, we were here in springtime and autumn…
We were here, not out of fun but for the `missing persons` from the area…
We came so many times, with different witnesses, collecting information, showing possible burial sites…
St. Hilarion area, as a whole has been a tough area since it is a military zone as a whole so you cannot simply enter a military camp to show a possible burial site…
Now with the election of Mr. Mustafa Akinci to the leadership position of Turkish Cypriots, there has been a shift concerning possible burial sites in military zones and this is a very positive development, although it is not enough since half a century passed from the day people `disappeared` - if we look at 1963, 53 years have gone by, if we look at 1974, 42 years have gone by and many parents have passed away, waiting for any news from their loved ones… Wives died, children died waiting for news from their `missing` father… Halil Ziya Desteban who is `missing` from 1964 had seven kids at that time, now he only has three kids alive, four of his kids died, his wife died and out of the three kids, one of them is struggling to survive with cancer… So many tragic stories and allowing the passage of time for so long is actually unforgivable and unacceptable… That is why we insist and we come again and again, to show again and again, to try to get information again and again…
One of my friends said, `In fact what you do is quite contradictory in itself because what you do requires so much patience but at the same time, what you do requires so much curiosity… You combine the two and this is amazing for me…`
Of course she had no idea how much it hurt inside my heart and how I felt like drowning from time to time but I would have to pick up all my pieces and continue if I wanted to get some concrete results…
That is why we are here once again to speak to the same witness we had spoken to six years ago…
Last year in these pages, I had written the story of the possible burial site of seven or eight `missing` Greek Cypriots in the area of St. Hilarion, inside a military camp area… I had said:
"One of my readers come to visit me at the newspaper where I work and we sit down to talk… We had visited him years ago together with the officials of the Cyprus Missing Persons' Committee and he had drawn up a map of `gamini` and where the remains of some Greek Cypriot `missing` were buried at St. Hilarion. Now he comes to say that if the CMP can get permission to go into this area at St. Hilarion, he is ready to accompany them and show them the exact location of the `gamini` and the burial place of the remains of some `missing` persons.
He had been serving there at the St. Hilarion military camp when he had accidentally come across the remains of some `missing` Greek Cypriots. It had been a `gamini` where soldiers were using as a place to throw trash… As he ordered some soldiers to cleanse out the trash, there came out the remains of the `missing` Greek Cypriots who had been buried in the `gamini`. This accidental find ended up him having the soldiers remove the remains and bury further up... He had provided with detailed information about this incident to the officials of the CMP when we visited him and had drawn up a detailed map…
`You know` he says, `using this map, they accidentally found another `gamini` where the remains of some other `missing` Greek Cypriots had been buried, much further down… Actually the map served quite well but in a completely different way! A `gamini` in Boghazi was found because of that map… Some people looking at that map found that `gamini` and incidentally some other `missing` were buried there but the `gamini` on the map is actually not that one, but the one in the military camp… This is a humanitarian task and I am ready to show this place that I have provided the drawing to the CMP… I consider this as a humanitarian duty… To go and show I mean… Because just as Turkish Cypriots want the remains of their own `missing` persons to be found, the Greek Cypriot relatives also have the same right… Now it is time for humanity to speak up… Those who know any information should also speak up…`…"
We have learned that the place he indicated six years ago as a possible burial site has not been marked on the list of military areas to be dug… So that is why we come once again to speak to him… We go with Xenophon Kallis, the Assistant to the Greek Cypriot Member of the Cyprus Missing Persons' Committee and Okan Oktay, the anthropologist in charge of Exhumations of the CMP on the 11th of May 2016, Wednesday to visit this reader of mine…
He greets us and reminds us that he had drawn a map, had provided names who had been there… This had been six years ago…
Once again he draws another map and promises to send me coordinates of the gamini (kiln) which was emptied and the secondary burial site of the remains of `missing persons` they had come across in the camp while he had been doing his military service at St. Hilarion…
`You know, all those remains, they were scattered… There was a whole skeleton but the rest of the bones looked as though they were collected from here and there and then buried inside the gamini` he explains… This was back in 1984-85… So many years have passed since then but he remembers clearly the details… It is not every day that you find remains and I am sure it made a mark on his heart – that is why he cannot forget and he insists that the Cyprus Missing Persons' Committee should do something about this place…
Someone in charge at that time had collected golden teeth from this gamini and later he would sell these teeth in Kyrenia…
He tells us of another place that I had been working on where some `missing persons` had been buried under a road… There was no asphalt when they had been buried there but as they rebuilt the road, the burial site remained under the road… This was the road going from Timbou to Aphania…
He has found a witness who told him that the road had cracks where there was the possible burial site…
I had written about this place and Katerina Antona who had had a brother `missing` from Agia Kepir (Aya) had also learned that information years ago…
Now I ask him to find the person to show him the exact location on the road where there are cracks and later he, himself can show us…
There were excavations by the Cyprus Missing Persons' Committee years ago on the left and the right of the road but not on the actual road itself…
My reader promises that he will do his best…
And I am sure he will…
In the evening, he sends me the coordinates of the gamini – the first burial site – and the second place where they had reburied the remains at the St. Hilarion area…
I pass on the coordinates to Xenophon Kallis and Okan Oktay so they can work on this…
My reader had told us six years ago that if the CMP gets him `permission` to go with them inside the military camp at St. Hilarion, he is ready to go and show the possible burial site to them…
Now he has repeated his offer again – for him this is a humanitarian task and he openly and clearly says to Kallis and Okan that he can go with them, if they like and if they get `permission`, to show them the location of the possible burial site…
I thank my reader for his humanitarian gesture and hope that with his help, more `missing persons` will be found…
With such good and insistent readers, I can bury the pain in my heart and continue…

The story of Eleni continues…

We meet at Alphamega Engomi in Nicosia on Friday the 13th of May 2016 in the morning and we have our coffee… Niki has come from London and has come to Nicosia to see me and also give samples of her DNA for her `missing` auntie Eleni… So as we drink our coffee, her `missing` auntie accompanies us in our thoughts and in our words… We talk about how she had met Mehmet Djon, the famous Turkish Cypriot coffee maker, how she had lived, how she had `disappeared`, taken from her house in Nicosia… Eleni, the petite woman who perhaps had witnessed the murder of three Greek Cypriots at the bakery across her house back on the 23rd of December 1963 – this might have been the reason why she would be taken from her house and she would go `missing`… Because it had happened the same night when some Turkish Cypriot soldiers would knock on the door and Eleni would open the door, they would take Eleni and no one would ever see her again…
Years ago I would come across her story and would investigate, trying to find out what had happened to her… Years ago I would write her story and someone would see it in POLITIS and would contact Niki to tell her that `the story might be about her missing aunt…` So from London where she lives, Niki would call me and we would speak and then she would write to me and give me more information… She would also send me a photograph of her `missing` auntie Eleni, an old photograph in black and white, taken in a studio… In the photograph Eleni would pose with her sister Despinou, who apparently had also been married to a Turkish Cypriot called Kemal… Despinou on the right, Eleni on the left… Despinou would survive the stormy days of 63, Eleni would not…
We drink our coffee with Niki who is the daughter of Panayiota, the only sister of the four – Eleni, Despinou, Anna and Panayiota – who had children. Neither Eleni, nor Despinou or Anna had children… So as we had spoken four years ago, back in 2012, today I would take Niki to the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics to give samples of her DNA… No one had ever given DNA for the `missing` Eleni and this would be the first time and I am so happy that we found each other with Niki so that if the remains of Eleni is found, she would not stay in a corner in the laboratory of the Cyprus Missing Persons' Committee… That there would be DNA to run tests – Niki will also ask her own sisters to give samples of DNA when they visit Cyprus because they all live in London and this way, we would have more than enough samples to run the tests…
At the Institute an official takes us to a small room and we sit and talk… He draws a sketch to place the family line of Eleni and trace the relationship of Niki to her…
Niki answers his questions and I watch as two samples of her DNA from inside her mouth is taken… The official, Mr. Manolis I think, tells us that in about a month's time, Niki's DNA will be in the system where the relatives of `missing persons` are… I smile, feeling happy – 53 years after the disappearance of Eleni we will now have a `matching` sample of DNA in the system, in case her remains are found or in case they have already been found and sitting in a box in the laboratory… Because there are the remains of at least 50 or 60 `missing persons` in the laboratory where there has been no `match` with the DNA samples yet. She could be one of those or she might not be…
After 10 years of struggle and resistance, excavations have begun last week at the Tekke Bahchesi in Nicosia where Eleni might have been buried since they buried some `missing` Greek Cypriots there who `disappeared` in 1963-64… We struggled quite a bit for the cemetery at the Tekke to be dug but there had been strong resistance from particularly the military circles but with the coming of Mustafa Akinci to the leadership of Turkish Cypriots and with his insistence on the opening up of military places where `missing` might have been buried, things would shift and we would have a chance for Tekke as well… There are many Turkish Cypriot `missing persons` from 1963-64 buried in the Tekke and some Greek Cypriot `missing` as well so we would have to see the results of the digging… Half a century after their `disappearance` there is `hope` if you can call it that because despite the fact that it was known that some `missing` were buried there, the authorities would not allow digging at the Tekke for five decades!!!! What great shame!!! Just like the Lakatamia cemetery where our journalist friend Andreas Paraschos had discovered that some `missing` Greek Cypriots had been buried but the authorities would not admit that, Tekke is also a great shame… Ten years ago as I would write the story of Tekke, I would get quite a bit of `reaction`, just like the `reaction` Paraschos had got back in 1995… Things fall into place years later and truth is trying to seep through the soil and see the light of day… Breaking down the taboos, trying to find out who might have been buried at the Tekke or at Lakatamia had been tough but as in the words of Mahatma Gandhi, `First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win…`
When we finish with the Institute of Genetics, we go back to Alphamega for lunch with Niki…
Niki would tell me stories of her family from Trikomo, their grandmother whose husband had died and she would move to inside the walls in Famagusta because it was cheaper to rent a house there… Her grandmother's brother had kicked her out of the house although the title deed had been in her name and she had also fields in her name in Trikomo but she did not know in those days and would move to Famagusta to survive… That must have been how Despinou would meet Mr. Kemal who had been the head of the railways in Famagusta and they would get married. Despinou and Kemal would decide not to have children since if it would be a boy, which army would the boy serve, Despinou would tell Niki years later… `The Greek Cypriot or the Turkish Cypriot army?...`
Still a valid question after so many years…
In Cyprus, as Cypriots, we have not been able to create space for Cypriots and the `two sides` force us to `choose` between `the two`… I think the whole essence of the so-called `Cyprus problem` and so much blood and tears is exactly this: That there is actually no space for Cypriots to survive on this land, whether they speak Turkish or Greek… The `system` created on this land forces you to choose between `the two sides` and does not allow any space for you to survive as a `simple Cypriot`…
Niki has to go back to Limassol and I have to go back to work so we say our goodbyes and I feel happy to have met her after four years of writing to each other and speaking with each other on the phone… She will come back in August and October and we will meet and go places… I will take her to where Eleni used to live with Mehmet Djon in Nicosia and perhaps we can go to Trikomo or Karpaz or Famagusta or wherever she likes to go… I am honoured to be connected to the relatives of Eleni and Despinou… Despite everything, our friendship will continue on this land where perhaps one day, there will be space for Cypriots to survive…

In search of “missing” Halil Ziya Desteban…

In search of "missing" Halil Ziya Desteban…

I sit in the car, my blood frozen… The view of the fields painted yellow, the trees lining up the side of the road – planted once upon a time by the British to cut off the wind – freeze my heart… I want to cry but tears don't come – I am just a frozen person now with almost nothing to say since words are never enough to describe this feeling…
We have come to Pervolia, Larnaca to meet a witness – he had called me about ten years ago and had told me his story…
I have seen him on and off, from time to time…
This time I go with Xenophon Kallis, the Assistant to the Greek Cypriot Member of the Cyprus Missing Persons' Committee to speak with him one more time and to see if we can find out anything new… To investigate further about this "cold case", the "murder case", the "missing person's case" all the way from half a century ago…
He had been young then, this witness whereas now, he is old and fragile. I almost don't recognize him now and go in the coffee shop to ask about him and they tell me, "It's him, he's sitting over there…"
I go to greet him and call Kallis to come by…
"I did not recognize you…" I say to him…
"I also had doubts whether it was you or not…"
We sit down – it is a chilly, cloudy day, windy…
We sit outside in the coffee shop and I introduce Kallis to him, hoping that he will not withdraw into himself… Hoping that he would talk to him, just as he had spoken to me about ten years ago…
He had told me about the "missing" Halil Ziya Desteban… Desteban with seven kids… The kind hearted man, dealing with vegetables… Innocent, not involved in anything… The man I wrote about who was from Softades and who had moved to Meneou… The man who was ambushed and pushed to the side of the road, into the gardens of Muhammed just outside Pervolia…
They would kill him there and he would go "missing" and by night time his son Djemal would start getting worried and would send a friend of his to check and they would see his green car where he had been forced to move and where he got out of the car… It would be dark by now and nothing to be done so Djemal would wait till the morning to contact the UN camp on the Larnaca road and they would go to see the blood stains behind the car, the blood stains leading to a small forest area across the dirt track… But no trace of Halil Ziya Desteban… No trace of him at all for the past 52 years…
Later on they would find his hat and when his wife would see the hat, she would faint…
The family would move from Meneou in fear of their own lives and go to live in Dromolaxia…
They would never return to Meneou…
His wife is no longer alive now, neither are four of his children… They have all died, one of them in the Larnaca Hospital in 1974 after he had been arrested by some Greek Cypriots.
Only three of his children are alive now, his daughter Nurten fighting cancer…
All of them waiting for news, for any news…
That is why we are here with Kallis, to see the witness who had found me ten years ago – to see if he can tell us a little bit more… Whether he forgot something… Whether I forgot to ask him something. Something that might be important…
This new investigation is due to a Swedish reader of mine who had sent me some photos and a film dating back from 18th of May 1964 when UNFICYP Civilian Police were investigating the murder of Halil Ziya Desteban. The Swedish Civilian Police of UNFICYP had filmed the crime scene and the investigation. This gives us an opportunity to refresh our investigations… I have given the photos and the film to the officials of the Cyprus Missing Persons' Committee and asked them kindly to restart their own investigations…
But I too have to do more so here we are with the witness…
Ten years ago he had told me that on the night of the 17th of May 1964 he was at the cinema… Then a teacher came and asked for his car…
The teacher told him that some Greek Cypriots had killed Halil Ziya Desteban and they needed his car to take him to bury him…
The witness had known Halil Ziya Desteban since one day some time before he would go "missing", Desteban would help him when he had run out of petrol and take him to Larnaca in his own car…
"I said to the teacher, whoever killed him should take care of the mess they created but then I thought, if they leave him there, perhaps the dogs would tear his body apart and I gave my car to the teacher to carry the body…"
Ten years ago I would run to try to locate the teacher he had been talking about… I would find out that he had been living in an old people's home…
I would tell Kallis about this old people's home and the teacher there so he would investigate…
Now Kallis asks the witness more questions – they converse half in Greek, half in English, for me to understand as well… I can understand some Greek but very very roughly since I have never learned – I can understand the subject but not the details… So from time to time Kallis would say to the witness, "Please speak in English so she can understand too…" and the witness would switch to English…
As they converse, something new that he did not tell me before comes out – that there had been a witness to the actual murder of Halil Ziya Desteban… This witness had been working in the gardens of Muhammed at that time and had been staying in the little farm house there… So he had seen everything and afterwards had blamed this man of being a killer…
"I was not a killer, I gave my car for them to carry the body – this person who worked in the gardens of Muhammed had seen my car, that is why he was blaming me…" he says…
Perhaps this was the reason why we came here – to find out that there was a witness to the murder and disappearance of Halil Ziya Desteban…
We thank the witness and leave to go back…
I sit in the car frozen, we pass the gardens of Muhammed and I am frozen… This had been the murder scene of an innocent person… I can't imagine how he felt when he was confronted by some thugs of Pervolia…
Kallis, the ever skilful and clever investigator, immediately sets out to investigate about the person who used to work in the gardens of Muhammed at that time…
We stop at a periptero (kiosk) on the side of the road and he makes some calls here and there… I find a stool and sit, frozen…
Almost before we reach Nicosia, he finds out that yes, this person we are looking for is alive and he also finds out his name… I am sure if there is more to find out, it will be Kallis who will find out…
I want to make a call to my readers and ask them to call me with or without your names… If you know anything about the "missing" Halil Ziya Desteban, please call me on my CYTA mobile: 99 966518… You can remain anonymous if you want to remain anonymous… What is important is not your name but to find out where Desteban had been buried so that we can return his remains to his family…

Γιατί άραγε η UNFICYP δίστασε να μοιραστεί τα έγγραφα με την Κυπριακή Επιτροπή Αγνοουμένων, με την οποία στεγάζονται στο ίδιο κτίριο στο Λήδρα Πάλας;
Όμως είναι αρκετά ειρωνικό το γεγονός ότι τα ΗΕ είναι παρών και στην Κυπριακή Διερευνητική Επιτροπή Αγνοουμένων από τη αρχή – από το 1981 – και τα ΗΕ είναι επίσης παρών και στην UNFICYP από το 1964 και ΔΕΝ έχουν μοιραστεί καθόλου πληροφορίες μέχρι τώρα… Μόνο τώρα μοιράζονται πληροφορίες – 52 χρόνια μετά… Γιατί αυτή η «καθυστέρηση» μισού αιώνα;

One of my Swedish readers sends me photographs and a film taken by the Swedish Civilian Police of UNFICYP while investigating the disappearance of Halil Ziya Desteban from Pervolia… 52 years after the disappearance of Halil Ziya Desteban, a film taken on the 18th of May, 1964 surfaces and this shocks everyone, especially the grandchildren of the `missing` Halil Ziya Desteban who had heard about but had never actually seen `the crime scene`…
My Swedish reader, not only sends these but also finds the notes taken that day by a Swedish UN soldier… In the Civilian Police diary of the UNFICYP was written:
"On May 18th 1964, at 11.00, a telephone message told us that there was a suspected murder in the village of Pervolia, close to Larnaca. We sent an investigation team to the crime scene. After the return to Nicosia, they reported that the case was about a 60 years old Turkish Cypriot male. He had left his house in the morning for a short trip with his car. When he didn`t return within reasonable time, his son sent away some friends to look for his father. They found the car on a lonely road just outside Larnaca. The man wasn`t to find, but traces beside the car indicated that he was wounded and probably killed there. Other traces showed that the body was dragged over the road into a small forest area. The body wasn't found there afterwards. The team performed a crime scene investigation, made some interviews. The only result of this was that some suspicions came up towards some Greek Cypriots, but no binding evidences were to find…"
I write a letter to the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot, as well as the UN officials of the Cyprus Missing Persons' Committee and share the photos, the film and the notes about the "missing" Halil Ziya Desteban and ask them, to revisit the site in view of all this.
I had written the story of the "missing" Halil Ziya Desteban about ten years ago through the story of his only daughter Nurten Ozturk…
With the help of my readers, we had done quite a bit of research around Pervolia, Kiti and Meneou and some of my readers had pointed out that he might have been buried in the "Gardens of Muhammed" in Pervolia.
The killing and disappearance of Halil Ziya Desteban had created great sorrow around these villages – no one had approved of this killing by a bunch of Greek Cypriots – that was why they were trying to help to try to find his possible burial site.
We had gone to the "Gardens of Muhammed" together with the officials of the Cyprus Missing Persons' Committee and had tried to locate some wells there where he might have been buried. One of the wells was excavated but nothing was found there. There were some other wells but there had been no further digging by the CMP in those wells.
Now with this new but old documentation that has reached us, we contacted the CMP again in order to refresh investigations in this area…
According to the notes of the UN soldiers the traces would lead to a small forest area – we need to go once again and in view of the film and the photographs from our Swedish reader, try to locate this small forest area…
Born in 1911 in the village Softades, Halil Ziya Desteban had settled in Meneou and when he disappeared he had been 53 years old. He was married with Nazmiye Hanim and was the father of seven children – six boys and a girl… He was dealing with vegetables, growing vegetables and selling them.
During the British times, Halil Ziya Desteban was a rural constable (turkopoullo – desteban), later on he had become a policeman and after he retired, he had begun dealing with vegetables. He had a car with registration number 8157, the colour of green that we see in the photographs that our Swedish reader has sent us.
He had left home on the 17th of May 1964 to go to Larnaka but never came back home… The investigation of UNFICYP took place on the 18th of May 1964 – a day after his disappearance…
He had been stopped by some Greek Cypriots around Pervolia-Kiti and that was when he had gone "missing".
Only three of his children are alive today – his wife, as well as four of his children have died… The rest of his children still wait for the return of his remains for a proper burial…
The son of Halil Ziya Desteban who passed away years ago used to play in the football team of Meneou – you can still see his photograph hanging in the coffee shop of Meneou… His name was Djemal Halil Ziya Balses and his daughter, Bedia Balses, sends me notes from his diary of those days… Djemal who had very good Greek Cypriot friends and who played in the football team of Meneou, together with Greek Cypriots, wrote in his diary:
"On the 17th of May 1964 my beloved father had gone to the Greek Cypriot village Pervolia to buy vegetables. At 20.00 he was not back and I got alarmed and started searching for him. I sent a friend to find him at 20.40 in Pervolia. When my friend came back he was alarmed – his car was found but he was nowhere. Immediately I got out. His car was found near the gardens of an Arab called Ismail Emmi. It was abandoned. It was night time and I realized we could not do any more investigation there and came back home. Until morning we cried in pain. On the morning of 18th of May, I went to the United Nations Camp on the Larnaka road and asked for help. There were three soldiers there. We went to the crime scene. The car was there. I cannot express how I felt at that moment…
Around 8 o'clock a Land Rover came from Larnaka, inside was an officer without a gun. With the English officers we went around the fields and trees there. There was no trace of my father. When we came near the car and looked carefully, I saw the marks there. Five feet away from the car, where the road met the field, there were a lot of footprints… These unknown killers were wearing ordinary shoes and stepping haphazardly on the soil and there was the impression that there had been a struggle here. At the back of the car, near the footprints there was a pool of blood. I don't know how I felt then… This was the blood of the great man who had raised me, the honest, true, educated man… An unknown foot had pushed soil over this blood. The blood was dark and clotted. Near the blood were the traces of pulling, crossing the road and the drops of blood were going inside the bush… There too, there was a pool of blood; the dry leaves had turned crimson.
All the trees, fields and stones were in their place around me. They had seen this, they were witnesses. I wanted to shout: "Hey trees, hey fields, hey stones, haven't you seen my father? Haven't you seen my father who did nothing wrong to anyone but who wanted to do good deeds for everyone? Why didn't you bend your branches and hit the killers who took his life? Why didn't you intervene and save him?"
As the wind blew, the branches of the trees are swinging and rustling. It's as though they want to talk to me and tell me what humans don't tell us. I am silent. You do not understand our language. I do not understand yours…
On Monday the English soldiers at the UN, the Swedish police, the Austrian police and some Greek Cypriots did a search there. Greek Cypriot police creating problems, trying to prevent the Swedish police from doing their job. If the UN investigations were not postponed but done on the same day as my father disappeared, perhaps his place would be found. Now the traces are disappearing…
Today for the first time I get in my father's car without him. We brought my father's car to the village as the sun was setting. That night the Turkish Cypriot radio of soldiers said that my father was missing, there were traces of blood, that my father was killed and buried elsewhere. That's what I thought too. I am very much afraid of him being killed… My father's hat was found 300 yards away from the crime scene by the police dogs. When we showed the hat to my mother, she fainted…
UN soldiers and UN police searched fields and wells. There was no trace… It has been three days that it is cold and windy and rainy… Father, are you cold in the fields? Maybe you feel cold. But how can I help you father… Show me a way… Where are you?"
It is quite ironic that despite the fact that the UN is present in the Cyprus Missing Persons' Committee as the "Third Member" since 1981 when CMP had been founded, the UNFICYP did not share such documents with the committee.
It is quite ironic and meaningful that we can reach such documents through the good heart and good will of our readers all the way in Sweden despite the fact that we have no "official position" anywhere and the CMP could not reach such documents all these years…
UNFICYP has been too late in sharing whatever documents they have at their disposal since the day they started serving in Cyprus since 1964…
Why did the UNFICYP show hesitation in sharing documents with the Cyprus Missing Persons' Committee that they share the same building with at the Ledra Palace?
In the last few months there has been some movement from the CMP asking the UNFICYP to share its documents and there were news that this was going to happen now…
In the past, another Swedish reader had sent me the UN notes on the massacre of Maratha-Sandallaris-Aloa in 1974 by EOKA-B and I again had shared this with the CMP – they did not have these notes either…
Several times I have written to UNFICYP about this or that "missing person" where UN soldiers had been present during their disappearance but none of my letters ever got answered…
Probably it is the "huge bureaucracy" of the UN itself that is causing this.
But it is quite ironic that the UN is present both in the Cyprus Missing Persons' Committee from the very beginning – since 1981 – and UN is also present in UNFICYP from 1964 and they have NOT shared information at all until now… Only now they are sharing information – 52 years after… Why this "delay" of half a century?
I thank my reader from Sweden with all my heart for sharing the photos and the film and the notes of the UN soldier from 1964 and ask my readers in Cyprus to help out with what they know concerning the possible burial site of the "missing" Halil Ziya Desteban… Please call me if you know something on my CYTA mobile at 99 966518 – you don't need to tell me your name if you don't want to – what is important is not who you are but where he might have been buried… I don't need to know your name or your face if you have your own reasons to want to stay "anonymous" – but let us try to help the relatives of Halil Ziya Desteban so that they can get back the remains of their father and give him a proper burial before they too pass away… They have been waiting for the past 52 years for this…
