The childhood traumas of war which never heal…

The childhood traumas of war which never heal…

Today, an article by one of my friends, writer and musician Eralp Adanir was published in our newspaper YENIDUZEN…
It was entitled "Going back 43 years…"
It reflected how our traumas from the times of conflict never heal but stay there since no one ever attempted to heal them…
We all live with our traumas from the conflict – I was barely five years old in 1963 and those memories of fleeing our house, the sound of the fighting, the frightening darkness because of shooting, the lack of food, being a refugee in different relatives' houses and most of all, the partition of our street and the fear of playing in the street stayed with me forever…
We should share these childhood memories of the conflict in order to show how it affected us all and how we pass it on to other generations… We could tackle these traumas only by sharing and knowing that war leaves scars in our psyche and that is one of the primary reasons why we should work for peaceful reconciliation…
Eralp Adanir as a musician and a writer worked throughout his life for peace… And what he shares with us is precious since it shows us what sort of trauma he has gone through… He has been for many years making TV programmes of music and culture, of books on "Bayrak" (BRT tv) and was persecuted in the past for being very outspoken for peace and reunification of our island… For many years he has been writing a weekly column in our newspaper YENIDUZEN and has many published books based on research about music, culture and other issues.
I want to share what he wrote… Eralp Adanir, in his article entitled "Going back 43 years" writes:
"It is a fact that those things we lived in our childhood make the basis of an unforgettable and non-erasable source of memory… That is why some of the psychiatrists, while trying to understand the problems of persons the first place they go is the period of "childhood"…
People like us who have seen and experienced war as children have this "trauma" in our past but always it stays somewhere in our daily lives…
Sometimes this "trauma" pops up and sometimes it doesn't but hides itself somewhere until you die…
But when I think about the war of 20th July 1974, I realize that my childhood memories of nine and a half years old have been split into two and this split is full of sadness…
I personally experienced the war at the age of nine and a half…
I experienced the surrender, the bullets, the shells, the smell of gunpowder, the whistle of the mortar rounds, the wounded, the dead bodies, the ration cards, the martial law…
In summary I lived through the biggest horrors that a child can live through…
In those days with my childhood mind things that did not make sense now make sense in the most appropriate way, I can now evaluate what sort of impact the war has especially over children.
On that hot summer day of 20th of July 1974, I was nine and a half years old.
I was in the centre of the Turkish sector of our Limassol, just across our hospital.
My memories: movies at the Taksim Cinema, Turkish songs played before the movie began and during the breaks… In our neighbourhood and at the Park Gazino playing football in the yard, the Sandwich-maker Uncle Kemal in our neighbourhood, Uncle Chakir, Uncle Osman the doner (gyros) maker, Uncle Salih the barber, the coffee shop of Salih Yek, the shop of Mustafa Muhsin, the coffeeshop owner Uncle Naim, Uncle Durmush the Bakkalis, Uncle Djemal, the Sedat Simavi Primary School, my class mates and teachers, the joy of 23rd of April Children's Day, the bayrams (religious feasts) where we would kiss the hands of the elderly and they would give us Money… The Ladies' Mile, Moloz, my grandfather's boats for the sea made of wood, the sea festival – panayiri – and the Limassol carnival… The love for football taking us over through the football teams of Limassol Doghan Turk Birlighi and Turk Ocaghi Limassol… Car trips on the bypass, my father taking us to the Akrotiri British Bases and me, eating "fish and chips" there for the first time in my life…
In the old Limassol, the sellers of pots under the eucalyptus trees, the monkey in the cage, the first sentence I was made to memorise: "Ena shelinia pagado…" and me buying ice cream from the cart of the ice-cream maker… Another Greek sentence we acquired in our language when the New Year would approach and we would decorate a New Year tree: Singing the song "Ay Vasili Erkete…"
These were the things on my childish memory until 10 o'clock in the morning on the 20th of July 1974.
Until the guns started speaking, bombs started exploding…
Until 5 o'clock in the afternoon when we would surrender as the Turkish Cypriots of Limassol, running from one house to another, tens of persons taking shelter in rooms, the crying, the fears…
And when it was time to surrender, the realization of what exactly was meant by the Greek Cypriot word "Exo!" ("Get out!") accompanied with the knock of the butt of a gun on the door… Another Greek sentence I would learn while trying to be with the civilian population gathered in the yard of the hospital just across our house: "Gatse de gado…" ("Sit on the floor")
Thousands of kids, old women and youth brought here from the centre of Limassol and surrounding areas…
The mudjaheet (Turkish Cypriot soldiers) or those whom they thought were "soldiers" put aside in front of the high wall of the Arnavut Mosque apart from the crowd…
That night was too long…
The painful moaning of the wounded would mix up with those who were wriggling with thirst, people were trying to find their loved ones, and Greek Cypriot and Greek soldiers with their guns pointed at the crowd, at the frightful eyes, the white sheet that was hanged on the flagpole and me and my family watching how they were looting our house just across from where we were…
Exactly 43 years later, I sat on the floor on the exact same spot.
I sat my daughter down next to me and I just wanted her to think and try to feel as much as she could, all these things…
I had been exactly at her age and sitting on the cement floor exactly like this, I wanted her to understand how horrible war is…"

The story of Osman Mustafa from Avdimou, killed in the Athalassa Psychiatric Hospital…

The story of Osman Mustafa from Avdimou, killed in the Athalassa Psychiatric Hospital…

In the yard of the Athalassa Psychiatric Hospital, exhumations have been continuing for some time and the remains of the patients, killed in the bombing of the Turkish war planes on the 20th of July 1974 are being found…
According to Mr. Photis Photiou, the Commissar for Humanitarian Issues, 31 patients had been buried in the mass grave and three of this group of 31 were Turkish Cypriots. His office is responsible for the exhumation of the mass grave in the yard of the hospital.
I had already written the story of Chakir Ali from Mathiatis who had been killed in the bombing and had taken his relatives to the office of Mr. Photiou to give DNA samples so that if and when the remains of their relative are found, he would not stay in a box in a cold laboratory but would be able to be returned to his family for a proper burial.
But who were the other two Turkish Cypriots killed in the bombing?
With the help of some of my wonderful readers, I find another family whose brother had been killed in the bombing…
The second patient who died in the bombing was Osman Mustafa from Avdimou… One of my readers whose mother in law is from Avdimou would investigate for me and would find his family and give me his sister's phone…
She would be very excited and touched and we would agree to meet with her and with two other sisters, so I would take them with my car to the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics to give DNA samples…
So, on the 27th of November 2017, Monday morning we meet at the Agios Domedios checkpoint and we go together with Ozay Sert, Fatma Haskasap and Zalihe Derelizade to the Genetics Institute… Mr. Kariolou, the head of the institute would meet us and take us up to a quiet conference room and first the three sisters of Osman Mustafa would help him to make a family tree…
Father's name: Mustafa
Mother's name: Meryem
Brothers and Sisters:
Nazife Akguchlu
Salih Soyuarap
Ahmet Soyuarap
Zalihe Derelizade
Fatma Haskasap
Ozay Ibramiye Sert
One more brother who had died at the age of 21:
Ibrahim Soyuarap…
Then Fatma, Zalihe and Ozay would give DNA samples… In the following days Fatma and Ozay would fly out to Australia to their brother Salih Soyuarap who lives there and Mr. Karioglou would teach them how to take a DNA sample from their brother and they would practice a bit to learn so that when coming back in one and a half months, they would bring back his sample as well… Mr. Kariolou would also answer with patience all our questions…
When we would be done at the institute, I would take them to the cafeteria of Alphamega to have coffee and cookies and some flaounes that Fatma Hanim made herself – she had also made the cheese that she had used in the flaounes. We would sit and talk as though we had been friends for many years and then I would interview Ozay Sert who would tell me the story of her family… We would have such a good feeling between us that we would feel like old friends… While searching for the story of Osman Mustafa, I would realize that I had found new "sisters"… Ozay starts telling the story of her family:
"My mother was from Prastio and my father from Avdimou… My mother came from Prastio and she got married to my father in Prastio and they settled in Avdimou… They had eight children… My father used to be a farmer, but he also worked at the British military bases… He would work many years at the bases and retire from there…
We had animals, fields and vines. We had sheep and goats and cows for milk. My father would work until noon in the bases and in the afternoon doing farming… We had a beautiful life in Avdimou… We would go to school and after school we would help our mother. All our brothers and sisters, we loved each other, all of us together. Love was very strong amongst us and my father and mother loved their kids…
When my brother had to go for his military service, because we had animals, we had to take care of them. After I graduated from the elementary school, I worked as a shepherd for three years taking care of our animals… And then I went for two years to a seamstress to learn sewing…
I must have been around 5 or 6 years old and I remember our brother Osman…. I also remember when he would get sick and they would take him to the doctor, get his pills… So long as he took his pills, he would not hurt anyone or anything… He would be okay… But you know our community, they harass and tease such people with such an illness and my father was feeling so sad about the behaviour of some people towards my brother. That's why they took him to the Athalassa Psychiatric Hospital so that he could use his pills regularly and be okay… He had had polio and high fever and that's why he had this illness – but so long as he took his pills, he did nothing harmful… I don't even have a photo of him…
Our small brother Ibrahim would get the same illness – again due to polio and high fever… A doctor had given him a wrong shot and he would lose his sense of seeing and speaking… We would take care of him in our house until he would die at the age of 21…
In 1974 when war broke out, we left our home in Avdimou to go to the British bases – we had taken nothing from our house, thinking we would go back but we would stay for three months in tents and then we would move to the northern part of our island… We would be settled at Agios Epiktitos… We had no news of Osman and we did not know that he had been killed in the bombing…
My father would visit Denktash and tell him, "My son is in the hospital…"
Denktash would speak vaguely first, "There is no clue yet but let's see what will happen later…"
But later he would tell him, "Uncle Mustafa, your son has been dead for the past two-three months…"
My mother would cry all the time, "I have another child, the hospital was bombed. Did he die? Or did they kill him? What sort of death did he face?"
She would always cry because he did not have a grave… But now we heard that there is digging in the yard of the hospital at Athalassa, our pain was renewed because my mother wanted him to be found and buried properly… I don't know, if it would be possible when his remains are found, there is an empty space next to the grave of my mother, I want to bury him there so that my mother would find peace… We lost my father 13 years ago and then a year later, 12 years ago, my mother passed away. They were such a loving couple, their love was amazing… They are buried next to each other in Agios Epiktitos…
I was always with my mother throughout my life and she would cry every day… She would always wear black. I would ask her, "Mother, why are you getting dressed like that?"
"I lost two sons my daughter" she would tell me… "My insides are like that, so let my outside appearance be the same…"
And I want to fulfil the wish of my mother, at least bury Osman next to my mother so that she can find peace and also I can find peace in my heart…"
What happened to their house in Avdimou?
She visited her house in Avdimou, there was an old woman with her old husband, a refugee from Karpaz area living in her house… She would receive them well…
"Come and stay here when you want" she would tell them but Ozay would say, "No thanks, we just came to visit" and then she would point out to the old lady, her mother's furniture…
"She was using the table and chest of my mother and my mother's bed… They were a nice family, but they passed away and now the house is closed and one room has collapsed… She used to give us honey but now they passed away…"
In Agios Epiktitos, the owner of her house, a Greek Cypriot who lived in Australia would visit and they would have a good relationship… He would want to see his house and she would say "Of course" and he would want to collect lemons from the garden and she would bring him bags to fill, as much as he wanted… "You have a beautiful heart. You received us very well. We are very happy that we saw our house and our garden" he told me… Every year or every six months he comes and visits us. He also invited us to his house in Nicosia, but we have had no opportunity to go and visit his house… I mean, if the big shots made a mistake, whether Greek Cypriot or Turkish Cypriot, no one holds a grudge against each other…" Ozay would say…
"So, we have such a life story… As I said, our life was full of difficulties, ups and downs, we stayed in the mandra to take care of animals, everything was difficult in the old times but still they were good times…
When I came to the northern part of the island, every night when I lay down to sleep I would dream of our own fields, our own land in Avdimou, the places we had built with our own labour, with our own sweat… And I would wake up with wet cheeks, I was crying in my sleep…
Then the checkpoints opened and we went there and satisfied our longing to see our land… But how sad it is, the Greek Cypriots come now to their house and can't say "This is my house", we go to there and we can't say "This is mine" and even cut a bunch of grapes although we had put so much labour there… Unfortunately, these are the things that happened over time and we have to accept these…"
After our interview would be published, Ozay would manage to find the only photograph of her brother Osman Mustafa after a lot of efforts, speaking with relatives and searching for it…
In the photo we can see the smiling face of Osman Mustafa with his mother Meryem… This was a photo Ozay explains taken when her mother prepared to take Osman to the hospital…
May he rest in peace, may all those killed in the hospital rest in peace…
May we always be able to avoid war and conflict, and may our children manage to live in peace…
War leaves deep scars and terrible traumas…
War leaves dead bodies of innocent people…
War creates refugees, people torn from their land and thrown all over the place…
War creates poverty…
War creates pain…
War creates such a mess that even after half a century, we are trying to clean up this mess…

Όμως ποιοι είναι οι άλλοι δύο Τουρκοκύπριοι που σκοτώθηκαν στο βομβαρδισμό;
Nazife Akguchlu
Salih Soyuarap

Ibrahim Soyuarap…
Μετά οι Fatma, Zalihe and Ozay έδωσαν δείγματα DNA…
Τι απέγινε το σπίτι τους στην Αυδήμου;

A bag of sugar, rice, macaroni and red velvet overalls for a child, prepared by a "missing person"…

The remains of Omer Hasan Depreli who was a civilian and who had been taken from his house in Kaymakli and was "missing" since the 26th of December 1963 has been found during the exhumations at the Tekke Gardens cemetery… Exactly after 54 years from the day he "disappeared", he will be buried on the exact day of his disappearance, that is 26th of December 2017.
The "missing" Omer Hasan Depreli, his family and other Turkish Cypriots from Kuchuk Kaymakli (Omorphita) had fled their homes from Omorphita on the 25th of December 1963 due to some fighting with Greek Cypriots… They had gone to the nearby Hamit Mandrez village seeking refuge… On the next day, that is on the 26th of December 1963, Omer Hasan Depreli would go together with Huseyin Vretchali, Mehmet Ahmet Kochino, Kemal Ahmet Kochino and Hasan Hakki to Omorphita – some to feed their animals and Omer to pick up some stuff from his house…
At his house, Omer would prepare a bag for his kids and family… In a bag he would put some sugar, some rice, some macaroni and an overall of red velvet for his 5 year old daughter Zehra…
But this bag would remain on a chair next to the table in the kitchen… He would be taken from his house by some Greek Cypriots, killed and would go "missing"…
After the 15th of January 1964, his family would be able to go for a quick visit to their home in Omorphita in order to pick a few things they needed, and they would find this bag in the kitchen… The car keys would be found 50 meters away from the house next to some reed… Probably while Omer was taken by force by some Greek Cypriots, he wanted to leave behind some sort of clue for his family, throwing his car keys there…
The family would never be able to go back and live again in this house – they would take a few pieces of furniture but the kids would have to live as orphan kids as refugees...
Omer Hasan Depreli was from Sinda and had married with Dervishe from the same village and they had five kids… His daughter Sozay was 17 years old, his son Izzet was 12, Huseyin was 10, Halil was 8 and his youngest daughter Zehra was 5.
Dervishe Hanim was pregnant with their sixth kid – this baby girl would be born after her husband disappeared and they would call this little girl Emine – but unfortunately Emine would have an accident and would burn and then die after a little while when she was two…
And Dervishe Hanim would die on the 29th of March 2003, without being able to see that the remains of her husband had been found in the Tekke Gardens' cemetery…
Together with the four other Turkish Cypriots, Omer Hasan Depreli had been taken from Omorphita and they had all been killed in cold blood. These were ordinary civilians – not soldiers – who had gone to feed their sheep and goats or pick up a few things for their families who had become refugees… They were murdered in cold blood by some Greek Cypriots who had gone searching for Turkish Cypriots to kill in Omorphita… You can predict who they might have been… We see this pattern in a part of the population of both main communities – the cowards, the opportunists, the killers who have killed innocent civilians both in 1963-64 and in 1974… Why? Because they had the "opportunity"… Why? Because they had "protection"… Why? Because they could get away with it…
The bodies of those killed like this would be collected from the area of Nicosia and would be put in the morgue in the Nicosia General Hospital. Then, the Greek Cypriot authorities would try to compile a list of around 21 or 22 Turkish Cypriots in the morgue, trying to define their identities and for some they would and for some they would write "unknown Turkish Cypriot from Omorphita". They would send this list to the Turkish Cypriot authorities through the Red Cross probably around the 27th of December 1963 and would ask them to come and pick up the dead bodies of these Turkish Cypriots from the morgue. But the Turkish Cypriot authorities would not go or could not go to pick them up… The Greek Cypriot authorities would wait for some days and then probably around the 4th of January 1964, they would take these bodies outside the Agios Vassilios Turkish Cypriot cemetery, open some big cavities and bury them in mass graves… After this, the Turkish Cypriot authorities, accompanied by British soldiers and the Red Cross would go there and open these mass graves on the 13th of January 1964 – a team headed by Dr. Husrev Daghseven would take out the bodies of these "missing" Turkish Cypriots and they would be sent to the Red Crescent Hospital in Nicosia for autopsies.
Despite the fact that the Turkish Cypriot authorities had a list sent by the Greek Cypriot authorities and despite the fact that the doctor, Husrev Daghseven, would recognize some of those from that particular list while taking the bodies out of the mass graves, the Turkish Cypriot authorities would not try to identify them and they would bury them all in the Tekke Gardens' cemetery as "martyrs of Ayvasil…" without even notifying the relatives of these "missing persons".
I would publish that list sent by the Greek Cypriot authorities to the Turkish Cypriot authorities exactly ten years ago back in 2007 in the YENIDUZEN newspaper on my pages called "Cyprus: The Untold Stories" and I would also interview the doctor, Mr. Husrev Daghseven about how he had exhumed the mass graves in Ayios Vassilios… In this way, for the first time the relatives of those "missing persons" from the list and our community would find out that there were some "missing" Turkish Cypriots buried in the Tekke Gardens' cemetery…
Some of the relatives of these "missing persons" would take this list after we published it and would go and visit some Turkish Cypriot authorities to demand an explanation, but they would be told, "There is no such thing! This is a game of the Greek Cypriots!", continuing to deny the truth…
It would take us ten years of struggle and push by some relatives of "missing persons" in order for the Cyprus Missing Persons' Committee to be able to dig the graves marked as "Ayvasil" or "unknown" in the Tekke Gardens' cemetery and they would find remains of 35 persons… Now we are in a process of DNA testing to see how many of them are "missing persons" and already we have had seven funerals of these "missing persons" – the funeral of Omer Hasan Depreli would be the eighth funeral…
His children Halil, Dr. Huseyin, Izzet, Sozay and Zehra will be burying the remains of their "missing" father on the 54th anniversary of his "disappearance", that is the 26th of December 2017…
The "missing" Omer Hasan Depreli will return to his children in a small coffin – isn't so much tragedy too much for his family?
Let alone the fact that he had been kidnapped and killed by some Greek Cypriots, his five kids had become orphans, his wife and kids had become refugees and waited throughout their lives for his return and not only this but our "own side" would hide his grave from his relatives even though they knew where he had been buried… And they would continue to hide it for decades, adding pain to injury for his relatives…
One of the sons of Omer Hasan Depreli, Dr. Huseyin Depreli says that "My clinic for over ten years was overlooking the Tekke Gardens' Cemetery… I did not know that my father had been buried there… And every day I would be looking at this cemetery from my clinic…"
He is heartbroken, and this cruelty is part of this big tragedy, this big scandal… The child of a "missing person" would go to his clinic every single day, would not know where his father was buried, his father would be on the official "Missing Persons' List" and many decades later, he would realize that he had been looking at the grave of his father without knowing it…
The grave of Omer Hasan Depreli and the other "missing persons" in the cemetery of the Tekke Gardens would only be exhumed after lots of struggle… Why? If their own children were buried here in unmarked graves, would the Turkish Cypriot authorities act like that? Maybe they used the pain of the "missing persons" and the "martyrs" for their own interest but what remains is only pain in the hearts of the people… No matter how hard they tried to cover-up and hide the truth, now in the end, the truth is out with all its nakedness. And all those who shouted at us that these graves should not open are one by one dying now… Now, their names are mentioned with the cruelty that they had been involved in against the relatives of "missing persons"… If they could hear what is said about them now, they would turn in their graves…
Omer Hasan Depreli was born in 1918 in Sinda. He was a chauffeur… During the Second World War between 1940-45 he was a soldier in the British army and had gone all the way to Egypt and Malta, driving heavy vehicles… During the years 1955 he had worked as an auxiliary policeman. After that he would work as a chauffeur. He did not have a bus or a truck of his own but would work for "Deveci Hasan" ("Hasan the Camel Owner") in the "Deveciler Khani" ("Khani of Camel Owners") in Nicosia, collecting wool from all over the island… He would collect the wool from the sheep from all over the island… He was the first person from Sinda to have a driving license… He was a civilian trying to help his family survive on this land…
I will go to his funeral to share the pain of his relatives and to lay some flowers on his small coffin… May he rest in peace now…

Ο «αγνοούμενος» Omer Hasan Depreli θα επιστρέψει στα παιδιά του σε ένα μικρό φέρετρο – δεν είναι τόση πολλή τραγωδία για την οικογένεια του;

He was deaf and mute, an old man who could neither hear, nor speak... The only way this old shepherd could communicate was by using his hands, making signs, using the expressions of his face and body... Yusuf Emir Hasan was an old man, a shepherd from Civisil, who was grazing his sheep in the fields outside Civisil, together with a cousin of his in early February 1964... He was not aware that this would be the last day of his life, that this would be the last time he would smile, last time that he would see the sun, the last time that he would look at his sheep... He was exactly 74 years old.
He saw some people coming on the main road to Mazotos and he was not aware, this old shepherd, that this was a crowd coming from the funeral of a policeman at Anaphotiya village – the policeman, Tasos Constantinou, had been killed at Ayios Sozomenios (Arpalik). Was he one of those policemen who had been ambushed and killed at the motor house at the edge of the village in early February 1964 or was he later killed during the fighting that arose after this ambush set up by a team of young TMT guys, without the consent of the TMT leader of the village?
The old shepherd did not know any of this – according to a Greek Cypriot friend who told me his story, when he saw a crowd coming, he went forward to greet them and to ask for a cigarette, holding his two fingers to his mouth and making a sign as though smoking a cigarette.
Instead of a cigarette, he would be killed here, on the main road to Mazotos together with his cousin Shevket Salih Sakalli... Shevket was 44 years old, also from Civisil, married with Pembe and had six children... Some Greek Cypriots who were coming back from the funeral of the policeman at Anaphotiya would kill them both and both are still "missing" since that day…
I am sure the old man did not and could not understand why he was being killed... After all, he only wanted a cigarette... In his silent world, he would not even be able to shout out loud, to tell his killers `Stop! Please stop!..` He would meet death, as he had met life in total silence – perhaps only with his eyes and his face and his hands, he would make signs to try to tell the Greek Cypriot killers that all he wanted was a cigarette!... The old man was not aware of the young TMT guys who had set an ambush outside Ayios Sozomenos, he did not know that there was fighting afterwards and some Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots had been killed, he was not aware that Ayios Sozomenos would be evacuated and all the Turkish Cypriots would be taken to Louroudjina (Akincilar) to live a life of displaced for the rest of their lives... He was not aware that Ayios Sozomenos would become a ghost village, at the edge of Dali and Potamia – over the years the buildings would crumble into stones and dust and nothing would remain, nothing except the memory of those who remembered how life was in this village...
Ali Fegan, one of the local legends of the Turkish Cypriot left movement would keep these memories and would speak to me to tell me the story of Ayios Sozomenos (Arpalik). Back in 1957-58 when Turkish Cypriot-Greek Cypriot conflict was breeding around Ayios Sozomenos in Louroudjina and Piroyi, his father Mustafa Lefkaridi, the mukhtar of the village would be beaten up by some men of TMT because he had made an agreement with the Greek Cypriot mukhtar of the village called `Saghir Dimitri` (The Deaf Dimitri) in order to keep peace in the village and not allow any outsiders to come to the village or create conflict in the village. The son of the Greek Cypriot mukhtar, Panteli, would flee from Louroudjina to come and stay with his father. The `nationalists` of the village were upset that the son of the Greek Cypriot mukhtar had come to stay in the village and wanted him to leave... So at night, the young TMT members would start a fire around the house of the Greek Cypriot mukhtar. The fire would be extinguished and the next day, the Turkish Cypriot mukhtar of Ayios Sozomenos, Mustafa Lefkaridi, would hand over these Turkish Cypriot youngsters to the policemen to be punished... Some Greek Cypriots from around Ayios Sozomenos, especially from Geri had also come and with the help of the Greek Cypriot mukhtar, some of those who had come to make trouble were also identified and handed over to the police. Ayios Sozomenos would be saved from the edge of the cliff in 1957-58 with the wisdom and leadership of the two mukhtars but not for long... And the Turkish Cypriot mukhtar, Mustafa Lefkaridi, together with the teacher of the village Mustafa Ethem, and another co-villager, Hasan Djidik would be beaten up by some men of TMT, for handing over the youngsters who had tried to burn the house of the Greek Cypriot mukhtar to the police... The youngsters would be set free in a few days and the mukhtar would be called `pro-Greek, traitor, communist etc.` A new TMT leadership would take over in the village. The Turkish Cypriots of the village would be split and people would start to stand guard against each other!...
In those years, the young TMT members or sympathizers would call themselves `The Djelal Hordan Youth`. A `missionary` from Turkey called Djelal Hordan would come to Cyprus and would go round the villages, trying to pump up `nationalism` and create a `nationalist youth`... `The Djelal Hordan Youth` of Ayios Sozomenos, would then proceed to set up an ambush on the 6th of February 1964 at the motor home 3 kilometres outside the village against some Greek Cypriots who would come to open the water for irrigation because this well would be used by surrounding villages as well. They would kill two or three Greek Cypriots here, among them a policeman and soon fighting would begin. The new TMT leader who is against such an ambush was not even in the village at the time of the ambush – he had gone to Potamia to speak with the leader of TMT there about how to stop this ambush. But `The Djelal Hordan Youth` would not listen to the local TMT leader and fighting would begin. Greek Cypriots from Geri, Dali, Athienou (Kiradjikeuy) and Timbu would come in a few hours to surround the village and during the fighting both Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots are killed, among them the new TMT leader Mehmet Huseyin Guspo who had been against the ambush... The Turkish Cypriots would be taken as prisoners and negotiations are carried out by the Turkish Cypriot mukhtar inside an armoured vehicle of the British with the Greek Cypriots. Starting from the evening of the 6th and the next day, the British soldiers would carry the Turkish Cypriots of Ayios Sozomenos (Arpalik) to Louroudjina. Some Turkish Cypriots from Potamia, Dali, Goshi, Petrofani and Piroi would also leave to go and live in Louroudjina. According to Ali Fegan, in those days `Cantonal Partition (Kantonal Taksim)` is foreseen and Louroudjina is one of the `designated cantons` so he sees this as part of the `Cantonal Taksim Plan`...

Είδε κάποιους να έρχονται στον κύριο δρόμο προς το Μαζωτό και δεν γνώριζε ότι ήταν μια ομάδα που ερχόταν από την κηδεία ενός αστυνομικού στην Αναφωτίδα – ο αστυνομικός Τάσος Κωνσταντίνου είχε σκοτωθεί στον Άγιο Σωζόμενο (Arpalik). Ήταν μήπως ένας από τους αστυνομικούς στους οποίους είχαν στήσει ενέδρα και σκότωσαν στο μηχανοστάσιο στην άκρια του χωριού στις αρχές του Φεβρουαρίου 1964 ή σκοτώθηκε αργότερα κατά τις συγκρούσεις που προέκυψαν μετά από αυτή την ενέδρα από μια ομάδα νεαρών της ΤΜΤ, χωρίς τη συγκατάθεση του αρχηγού της ΤΜΤ στο χωριό;

Gonce Goksun, the beloved daughter of "missing" Vasit Mustafa who had gone "missing" in 1963 and whose remains were found in the Gardens of the Tekke Cemetery and buried on the 14th of November 2017 Tuesday morning in Chatoz by his family spoke to me and told me about her father, her mother, her brothers and sisters and their lives...
They once had a very good life when their father was alive: Vasit Mustafa was a very active working-class person - he was a sandwich maker but not just that... He was making ice cream, he and his beloved wife used to make home cooked potato chips and package them and sell them at the buffets of the cinemas, he used to also run the canteens/buffets of some schools... In their house even on those days they had a gas stove with oven, they had a refrigerator and TV set which was a big deal in those times…
And Gonce remembers her mother being very busy, cooking chicken for the sandwiches or making potato chips and packing them...
They used to live in a beautiful garden called "Shakir'in Bahcha" (Shakir's Garden) which was in fact the reason why the Chaghlayan Mahalla (Neighbourhood) exists... Shakir's Garden was founded by Shakir and he used to grow vegetables and sell them to the public - he also rented houses and had a summer cinema run by his son in law... Chaghlayan was the entertainment area of the Nicosians in those times - I was also born in the Chaghlayan neighbourhood - it is very close to Agios Kasianos and Famagusta Gate and Kaymakli - and I still live there...
People used to come to the couple of summer cinemas or visit the Children's Garden of Chaghlayan that my father had built when he was in the Nicosia Municipality, enjoy sweets from the London Confectionery and the old men would sit and have their narghiles at the famous coffeeshop of Enver or have kebaps at Anibal's or the Chaghlayan Restaurant...
Gonce Goksun and her brothers and sisters and their mother Suheyla Zehra first moved in with their aunts when Vasit Mustafa went "missing" in December 1963, later they would go for a year to live in Chatoz but came back to their own house... Gonce's mother worked hard to raise her five kids - she would go to work as an orange collector in Morphou very early in the morning or in Kyrenia at constructions, carrying cement in buckets... She had a very modest wage since her husband was "missing" and every month when she would get paid, she would buy "doner" ("gyros") for her kids since the restaurant Anibal was just across their house and all summer, kids would be smelling the "gyros", being able only to eat that once a month and half a portion each…
"There was no problem with shish kebap since when we would go to the village, my grandfather would cook that for us. But that is lamb meat… Doner (gyros) is different and its smell is different – it is made from beef so that smell, we would smell all summer when the restaurant was open" she would explain to me… Although his father had "disappeared" when he was together with this particular restaurant owner, Saffet Anibal – there was some sort of ambush and fighting and Vasit Mustafa would be killed and some others would be injured in Nicosia near the Aspava Restaurant, next to the Traffic Police of the time – Anibal would know who these kids were but he would still charge them for the "gyros" she remembers… "Looking straight into our eyes, knowing who we were, that we were the kids of "missing" Vasit Mustafa, his friend, he would still take the money from us…"
Gonce remembers days of rationing food when she would go with a baby carriage and stand in line to get whatever they were distributing...
Despite all this, she has had a good childhood since her aunties and uncles and grandparents were kind hearted people who embraced the kids and tried to take care of them...
She was very happy when summer holidays would come and she would go to her mother's and father's village Chatoz... There she would help her grandfather to roll sheftalies since he was selling kebaps in a sort of a periptero and she would also learn to make baskets with reed and they would cook village bread, bulla and all sorts of delicacies in the village...
She was five and a half years when her father went "missing" - she remembers crying in the house...
Vasit Mustafa was left wounded in front of the Aspava Restaurant – did he die there or was he heavily wounded? Did he die due to loss of blood?
We don't know that… What we know is a report stating that two Turkish Cypriot policemen had taken his body to the Nicosia General Hospital and had delivered his body to a Turkish Cypriot nurse working there…
There were other Turkish Cypriots' dead bodies in the morgue – killed at different points of Nicosia and gathered there. The Greek Cypriot officials would try to compile a list of those killed Turkish Cypriots and they would send a list of 21 or 22 Turkish Cypriots in the morgue to the Turkish Cypriot authorities through the Red Cross asking the Turkish Cypriot authorities to go and pick up those dead bodies.
Turkish Cypriots would not or could not go…
Then the Greek Cypriot authorities would decide to bury those Turkish Cypriots in the morgue of the hospital outside the Agios Vasilios Turkish Cypriot cemetery… They would open big holes and would bury them in three mass graves…
This would be around the first week of January 1964…
On the 13th of January 1964, the Turkish Cypriot authorities would send a team to the mass graves of Agios Vasilios accompanied by British soldiers to start digging there… Dentist Husrev Daghseven would lead the exhumations in the mass graves and what he would see while opening those mass graves would have an impact on him for the rest of his life…
"The terrible sight was more than even a doctor can bear" he would write in his report…
I would find him ten years ago and interview him…
He had taken out 22 bodies from the mass graves, one of them a child, Ayshe from Agios Vasilios who was ten years old…
"She was shot dead… They were all shot dead… Mostly from behind them… Hands and feet of some of them were tied… We had taken some youngsters to help out in the exhumation but they all felt horrified when they saw the bodies and got sick… I sent them back to Nicosia with the bus and so I went into the mass graves and took each body out with my own hands from the grave… After that I was in depression for one and a half years… Since I was a dentist working for the government, I would go to schools to treat the teeth of students… About a month ago, I had fixed the teeth of Ayshe… Now seeing her like that in a mass grave was a huge shock… I recognized her…"
He would also recognize at least two or three persons from the list of the Turkish Cypriots who had been in the Nicosia General Hospital morgue – the list of 21 or 22, sent by the Greek Cypriot officials to the Turkish Cypriot officials… One of those on that list was a nurse working at the Nicosia General Hospital and he had been killed there…
According to the information I gathered ten years ago, one night before the exhumation by the Turkish Cypriots, some Greek Cypriot "authorities" would send a team to the mass graves and they would take out nine bodies from the mass graves and take them elsewhere to rebury them… To relocate their burial site… Why? The reason was the list of 21-22 that they had sent to the Turkish Cypriots… Meanwhile there had been killings by some Greek Cypriots in Agios Vasilios and they had buried them in the same place Agios Vasilios… Those Greek Cypriots– whoever they were – thought that if more than 21-22 bodies come out of the mass graves outside the cemetery, that is 30 or 31, then the killings at Agios Vasilios would also come out so they wanted to "cover up"… That is why they relocated nine – of course we don't know if it is really nine or more or less – elsewhere. They are still "missing"…
As though this was not enough, now a new "cover up" by the Turkish Cypriot authorities would take place: Knowing that there were killings by some Greek Cypriots at Agios Vasilios, including the little Ayshe and her grandmother, they would say to the public that these 21 or 22 bodies they found in mass graves in Agios Vasilios were all those Turkish Cypriots killed in Agios Vasilios… They would not identify them and compare them according to the list they had from the Nicosia General Hospital and would bury them, without giving any notification to the relatives, not saying anything to them, at the Tekke Gardens Cemetery…
They would write on their graves "Ayvasil 1", "Ayvasil 2" or "Unknown" and some of the graves, they would write the names of those who had been killed at Agios Vasilios…
In this way, the "missing" would become "missing" a second time since they would not say anything to their families…
That is why when the remains of "missing" Vasit Mustafa would come out of the Tekke Gardens Cemetery, the family would be shocked.
Gonce Goksun would tell me, "This Tekke Cemetery thing messed us up… I remember as a young girl in elementary school, every 21st of December, commemorating the black days of 1963, the school would take us to the Tekke Gardens Cemetery and we would look at the graves there… Without knowing, I was visiting the grave of my father… It is a shame that for 54 years, they did not tell anything to his family and even though they knew he was buried there, they made us wait… My mother waited for him to return…"
This big scandal would come out during the funeral of "missing" Vasit Mustafa in Chatoz. Both Gonce Goksun and his son Gonal Goksun would express their anger and sadness for this cover-up…
It would take us ten years of struggle for the actual digging to start in the Tekke Cemetery… Relatives would write letters to CMP, relatives would form a committee and make visits to push for the digging of the Tekke… When Mustafa Akinci would come to power, he would also push together with Halil Sadrazam and those in the Cyprus Missing Persons' Committee would push as well… From the very beginning Xenophon Kallis would insist that Tekke should be dug to find some Turkish Cypriot "missing persons" there… So in the end, the obstacles created by some civilian and military authorities would give way – in a period of ten years!!! – so that some graves at the Tekke would be dug – only those marked as "Agios Vasilios" or "unknown"… But there should be more digging in and around the Tekke since we know that there should be more "missing persons" buried there… Many of my readers and witnesses gave information that some Greek Cypriot "missing persons" were also buried around the Tekke… Around the Tekke the scene has changed dramatically since there was building of shops in this area… But still we must try and push so that all this "cover-up" would end and those "missing persons" buried here finally can go back to their relatives to be buried properly…
We must also push for more digging at Agios Vassilios cemetery – there was some digging there by the Cyprus Missing Persons' Committee, but they could not find anything… That place too has changed – it is a military village now and we cannot enter to investigate… But as I was told, a monument was erected in the area where the mass graves had been… There had been information that there were burials there at least 3 or 4 times so we must push to make sure that there are no more "missing persons" buried there…
So far, there has been seven funerals of Turkish Cypriots whose remains have been found in the Tekke Gardens Cemetery… Next month there will be more… May they all rest in peace and I share the pain of the relatives and thank all my readers who helped out in the struggle for the past decade, helping us to uncover the "cover-ups" by officials from both sides…

Είχαν αφήσει τραυματισμένο τον Vasit Mustafa μπροστά από το εστιατόριο Aspava – άραγε πέθανε εκεί ή ήταν βαριά τραυματισμένος; Πέθανε λόγω αιμορραγίας;
